The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin (Review by Erin Woodward)

My friend Maureen had an advance copy of this book and suggested I pick it up, she’s got great taste so I expected good things. I finished it last week and as is true with any good book it didn’t take me longer than a few days to read it.

I can’t seem to find a “What to read in 2018” article that doesn’t include Benjamin’s recently released hit. I even included the book in my own for InStyle UK.

So what’s it about and why is it so good? 4 kids (2 brother 2 sisters) – lower east side – 1969 visit a psychic who gives each of them the date they will die. The narrator then follows each of the children through their lives to looming date where they expect to die. Whether they believe the psychic or not none of them forget the dates they were given and thinking about it you can hardly fault them.

Benjamin is a gifted storyteller and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out if they lived their lives the way they did because of the prediction and/or if their deaths were as a result of the prediction. You won’t really understand that until you read it. But it measures up to the hype so grab yourself a copy.
